There are two categories of video editing – Linear editing and Non -Linear Editing or Digital video editing. Linear Editing is just copying part of the film from one tape to another and changes are made on another tape.
In Digital video editing, the recorded videos from digital camera are transferred to the computer and edited using different software.

•Re-ordering the altered matter in to proper sequence.

•Discussing with the other members of the film (director, producer or client) all through the post production course.

•Using new techniques and graphics to increase the quality of the film or video.

•Selecting the most useful part of the picture, drama or story.

•Writing comments.

•Online editing – Correcting defective video recordings, adding special effects to make the video more effective.

Key skills and qualification required for video editing

A person, who is really interested in creative work, can really enjoy the work of a video editor. A video editor should possess skills like knowledge of techniques in digital cameras, keeping abreast with the latest editing technologies, keen observation for editing and good imagination.

For video editing you should hold degrees in video editing courses like bachelors or master’s degree in animation or media arts, diploma in video editing and sound recording or postgraduate diploma in post production. All these courses are very important for imparting fundamental skills required for video editing.

After the completion of the course you may get many opportunities in different arenas. Apart from being an integral part of a film or television production team, video editors are also required for resolving legal issues.
They can play a vital role in law enforcement, especially for recreating crime scenes. These days, video editors are also necessary to edit wedding and birthday party videos.

Salary and conditions

Those who are working for television, post production processes, their salary ranges from £18,000 – £25,000. An individual with three to five years of experience can draw a salary ranging from: £20,000 – £50,000.

If individuals secure a video editing job through an agency, they must pay a specific percentage or flat fee from the contract. Working hours depend on the type of work .Generally nine to six is the working period.
