Question about legal name change?

Ok, I’ve made up my mind to petition the court for a name change. I’ve researched the procedures for the state where I live (NC).
I’ve been miserable with my last name all my life, for a number of reasons. I want to take my grandmother’s (or great-grandfather’s) surname because no one believes me when I tell them I have Spanish blood (my grandmother’s side came from Spain). Also, my legal last name is very ugly and I have always wanted a beautiful last name.

Here is my problem. I know that when I change my name, I am going to have to change ALL my documents- driver’s licence, passport, bank account, etc.

I’m going abroad at the end of April and I’ll need my passport. Do I have enough time to get my name change before my trip???
Do I have to get my passport changed before I go abroad?? I don’t want to ruin my trip but I REALLY want to get my name changed because I HATE it!

:)

Thanks!
It takes two weeks in Greensboro, where I live

I should say up front that I’m not all that familiar with the passport situation since new airline security procedures have been put in effect.

But, you are in the same situation as a lot of newly married women who change their names because of a marriage. In general, they do just fine when showing that their maiden name and their married name both refer to the same person.

I would carry as much legal information about changing your name from the old one to the new one as you can handle. This would include a copy of the petition and possibly the newspaper ad, if that’s what you have to do where you live.

Generally speaking, your name changes the instant the court says it does. I don’t know what it’s like where you are, but this process can take six months or more or it can take as little as four weeks. Check with the U.S. passport office to find out what they require.
