public cord blood banks

Cord blood banking?
I heard once that you could donate you cord blood to a public bank . Has anyone actually done this and if so how do you get that process started?
To be more specific I was actually wondering about donating it to a public bank, not the private banks. With the public banks you can donate for free and it goes to anyone in need not just you or your family.
The problem with donating cord blood, it that most ( if not all) insurance companies, do not cover the cost. Sad but, true. I’m not sure as to how the process goes, in far as, donating the cord blood for a public bank. It would be best to ask your insurance company and ask if they will cover it. Cord blood technology is relatively a new concept and is quite expensive. So, even though that you have the best of intentions, your insurance may not cover the cost. I hope that this helped some.
