Is it possible to create a perpetual bio regenerate space station?

say if you had a station with tons of solar panels to generate energy that could be used to recycle both air and water and also create artificial light to grow food for the passengers. such a station would not need to be sent supplies of any kind and generation after generation could live within the station. (an example would be the ship from the movie walle)

There have been some serious designs considered. They even built a completely self-contained environment here on earth with nothing but sunlight going in, and people lived in it for several months.

Ecological, self-sustaining balance in such an environment is a tricky proposition. But of course, humans would be able to make adjustments to various balances as needed. In theory, it’s possible. I think the main problem for a long term environment in space like that would be preventing leaks. Any materials used in seals would degrade with time. This part of the system would need external replenishment.

Miss Evers' Boys

Miss Evers’ Boys

$2.92

Laurence Fishburne helped shepherd this Emmy Award-winning exposé from American medical history books to the small screen. Anchored in the 1973 Senate inquiry into the infamous Tuskegee Study, the film uses a flashback structure to take us back 40 years as Nurse Eunice Evers (played with honest conviction by Alfre Woodard, who also earned an acting Emmy for her powerful performance) describes how…

Bob Dylan - No Direction Home

Bob Dylan – No Direction Home

$7.92

It’s virtually impossible to approach No Direction Home without a cluster of fixed ideas. Who doesn’t have their own private Dylan? The true excellence of Martin Scorsese’s achievement lies in how his documentary shakes us free of our comfortable assumptions. In the process, it plays out on several levels at once, each taking shape as an unfailingly fascinating narrative. There is, of course, the …

The Howlin' Wolf Story - The Secret History of Rock & Roll

The Howlin’ Wolf Story – The Secret History of Rock & Roll

$8.68

What better way to cap off 2003, the “Year of the Blues,” than with this eminently watchable documentary about Chester A. Burnett, better known as Howlin’ Wolf? Arguably second only to Muddy Waters among the Mississippi Delta singers who traveled north and pioneered urban electric blues (their supposed rivalry is the subject of one of this DVD’s bonus features), Wolf was a big, imposing man with a…

Biography – Malcolm X: A Search For Identity [VHS]

$4.75

All these decades after his assassination at the age of 39, Malcolm X remains one of the most controversial figures in modern American history, and this segment from the A&E Biography series amply demonstrates how he came to be the subject of so much debate. Born to a family that followed the black separatist beliefs of Marcus Garvey, Malcolm Little grew up distrustful of whites, and his father’s…

A&E Biography – William Shakespeare: Life of Drama (1996) [VHS]

$14.95

Though Shakespeare is heralded as the world’s most influential and admired writer, little is known about the man himself. That didn’t stop A&E Biography from weaving together a substantial birth (in 1564) to death (in 1616) portrait from spotty documentation, historical accounts, and interpretations of the master’s work itself. It won’t give away all the video’s surprises to reveal here that Shake…

Biography - Cary Grant: Hollywood's Leading Man [VHS]

Biography – Cary Grant: Hollywood’s Leading Man [VHS]

$14.95

Onscreen, Cary Grant evolved into an idealized male, at once virile and elegant, irresistibly handsome yet disarmingly self-deprecating. From a 1930s approximation of beefcake in early speaking roles opposite Mae West through his revelatory success in screwball comedies and inevitable box-office triumph as a romantic lead, Grant sustained an inner core of good humor and intelligence. If those qua…
